The regional council has announced that the new Southwest Ethiopian People's Region will have four capital cities of equal status.

The council announced this during a discussion with community representatives from all six zones of the region on the bill for the establishment of multi-city capitals.

The multi-city establishment bill states that Bonga, Tarta, Mizan Aman and Tepi will be the regional capitals of equal status.

The bill for the establishment of multiple cities also mentions that the four main cities of the region were made to ensure equitable economic growth.

If the bill is subsequently approved by the regional council and implemented, the Southwest Ethiopia People's Region will be the first region to have four capital cities of equal status.

The participants of the discussion expressed their opinion that more discussions should be held on the bill proposed to make four capital cities of the region.

In addition, in the forum chaired by the speaker of the South West Ethiopian People's Regional Council, Ato Wurdmu Kurta, the draft decree prepared to outline the powers and functions of the regional ethnic council was also discussed.
